Read Write Inc.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 3 to 7 year-olds learning to read and write and for 7 and 8 year-olds needing to catch up quickly. Although reading is taught using synthetic phonics, the programme is so much more than that.
Programme progression:
In Nursery, children learn the first 30 sounds in short daily sessions.

In Reception all children:
Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge
    • Read with fluency and expression
    • Learn to spell using known sounds
    • Write confidently by practising what they want to write out loud first
    • Work well with a partner.

By the end of Year 1 all children are accurate and speedy readers. Fidelity to the teaching programme, rigorous assessment, tracking and tutoring ensure that we can guarantee progress for every child. Further Read Write Inc interventions take place in the afternoon to allow some children to bridge any gaps in their phonics knowledge.

At Cambridge Road CP& N School, the Nursery, Reception, Year One, Year Two and some Year Three and Four children take part in RWI sessions three times a week. The children are grouped by ability and ability setting is used in Nursery and Reception and Year One and Two. The structure of the RWI programme is followed carefully by the teachers and TAs.

These RWI children then take part in genre based work on a Thursday and Friday, giving them opportunities to write lengthy pieces of work.
